The Year of the Nurse Celebration Continues!
When 2020 was deemed the Year of the Nurse, no one expected it to be a year when nurses faced a global pandemic and new challenges. Because of nurses’ extraordinary work over the past year, the World Health Organization decided to extend the Year of the Nurse into 2021!
NANN is excited to take this opportunity to further highlight the outstanding contributions of nurses from all over the world and the amazing strength and fortitude they have demonstrated throughout the past year. NANN will be planning various activities to help the neonatal nursing community celebrate their coworkers, the profession, and—most importantly—themselves.
Visit our 2021 Year of the Nurse page to find details on how to get involved with this year’s celebration. Happy Year of the Nurse 2021 – let’s give it another shot!
New Position Statement: COVID-19 Vaccination
Regarding COVID-19 vaccination, NANN recommends that nurses get vaccinated, keep abreast of the most updated information regarding vaccination, convey accurate information about the vaccines, and develop strategies to reinforce confidence in vaccination. NANN Connections to Address Bullying in the NICU
NANN Connections is back with its third event, Bullying in the NICU. This session will address bullying in the NICU work setting with a conversation circle led by the Membership Committee. The group will engage with attendees by leading a discussion on bullying and what we can do to minimize it.
The event will take place Thursday, June 3, from 6 – 7 pm CDT. Members and nonmembers are welcome to attend for free! Claim your spot for the upcoming NANN Connections event by registering today! To allow enough time for the discussion, this NANN Connections will not have an exercise component, but look for a workout to be back on the schedule at our August NANN Connections.

Share details about this campaign with colleagues, families, and anyone who may be interested in participating!
Advocacy Update: Nurses in Washington, Maternal Health Bill
Three NANN representatives joined nearly 100 nurses to participate virtually in the Nursing Organization Alliance-led Nurse in Washington Internship (NIWI) program last month. Elizabeth S. Schierholz, PhD NNP-BC (NANN NIWI scholarship recipient); Michelle M. Cherry, DNP RN, Health Policy and Advocacy Committee chair; and Mary Kay Ams, senior manager of operations, learned how to influence health care through the legislative and regulatory processes.
After 2 days of education from expert nursing advocates, the nurses attended virtual visits with members of Congress and their staff. NIWI participants shared their personal experiences as nurses during the COVID pandemic and advocated for increased funding for nurse workforce development and research and for extension of telehealth access.
Also, NANN continues to work through the Nursing Community Coalition (NCC) to build relationships with new members of Congress and federal staffers, signing onto NCC welcome letters and messages supporting the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act (H.R. 959/ S. 346) and FY 2022 funding for the Title VIII Nursing Workforce Reauthorization Act. Sponsored by nurse and U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood (D-IL) and U.S. Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), the Momnibus Act is a multipronged approach to improving maternal health in the United States. The current 2022 Title VIII request seeks $530 million for nursing workforce development programs.
