New in 2023! RN Rising Star Award

The RN Rising Star is for a nurse who exhibits passion and growing expertise in the field of neonatal nursing, with an attitude of continually seeking learning and professional growth opportunities. This RN actively participates in workplace activities above and beyond the expectations of their role and inspires others to do the same. The RN demonstrates a commitment to professional development and education. Additionally, the candidate collaboratively engages in projects/initiatives that positively impact their institution, patient outcomes, family interactions, and the nursing profession with a specific focus on the neonatal population.

The nomination period for the 2025 Awards is January 20—March 31, 2025.

Candidates will be able to meet the following criteria:

• Within their first five years of practice.
• Demonstrate excellence in the practice and art of neonatal nursing.
• Engaged participant in additional activities within their place of work such as committee involvement, specialty roles, and quality improvement initiatives.
• Shows evidence of learning to lead and mentor others.
• Actively seeks and participates in professional development opportunities.

Nomination and Selection Process:

NANN members can nominate a peer or self-nominate themselves for the RN Rising Star Award. Nominations must include one letter of recommendation and a CV/resume. Submitted applications are shared with the NANN Awards Task Force members for review and the applicants are scored based on their ability to meet the award's criteria. 

Recognition and Reimbursement:

The awardee will receive complimentary conference registration, airfare/ground transportation stipend of $500, housing stipend of $500, and a trophy at NANN's Annual Conference.

Peyton Villarreal is a dedicated and accomplished neonatal nurse. Working at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital for the past four years, Peyton has consistently demonstrated clinical excellence, innovative thinking, and unwavering commitment to improving neonatal care. Her pioneering work in implementing glucose gel intervention for hypoglycemic infants has significantly reduced NICU admissions by 71% and improved exclusive breastfeeding rates by 6%.

Peyton's leadership extends beyond her clinical role. As Chair of Clinical Practice Committee and an active member of several other hospital committees, she has driven numerous quality improvement initiatives that have enhanced patient outcomes and safety. Her ability to inspire and guide her peers showcases her emerging leadership skills.

Committed to lifelong learning, Peyton is completing her Master's in Nursing Education while already holding a Master’s in Biomedical Sciences. She regularly attends conferences, workshops, and continuing education courses to stay abreast of the latest advancements in neonatal care. Peyton’s dedication to professional development is evident in her mentorship of newer nurses, providing valuable guidance and support to help them develop their clinical skills and confidence.

Peyton’s passion for neonatal care extends beyond the hospital. She volunteers with Mothers of Held Angels, supporting grieving families, embodying empathy and compassion. Her innovative educational efforts, including presenting at conferences and creating accessible learning resources for NICU nurses, further highlight her dedication to advancing the field.

Peyton’s clinical expertise, leadership skills, commitment to professional growth, and compassionate care make her an inspiring figure in the nursing community. Congratulations to our RN Rising Star Peyton Villarreal!
