NANN-AP Corner
Together, We Accomplish So Much!
Barbara Snapp, DNP APRN NNP-BC
NANN-AP Council Chair
I cannot believe that I am writing my last NANN-AP Corner. Where has time gone? It has been an honor and privilege to serve as the advanced practice council chair for the past 2 years.
My job was made so much easier by my amazing partners who were tasked with moving NANN’s advanced practice division forward. Kudos to Dedra Teel, Desi Newberry, Heather Stephens, Julie Sundermeier, Leann Baker, Leanne Nantais-Smith, Taryn Edwards, and Tosha Harris.
So much of what the NANN-AP Council does is behind the scenes, and this group has worked hard to represent neonatal advanced practice nurses. They were instrumental in moving forward projects you identified as important to you.
A quick recap of the items you suggested over the past 2 years begins with the most obvious: our name change. Changing our name from NANNP to NANN-AP allowed us to formally welcome and recognize our valued clinical nurse specialist (CNS) colleagues.
In conjunction with the name change, the NANN-AP mission and vision statement were updated based on member comments solicited in our MyNANN community and input and guidance from applicable SIGs.
Another accomplishment was converting the APRN preconference from a half-day summit to an all-day summit. This is a direct result of your requests—and a very hardworking APRN Summit taskforce led by Dr. Leann Baker). Robust attendance will allow us to expand our offerings at future conferences, too. There is truly something for everybody at All-Day APRN Summit on September 17 in Orlando, FL. NANN-AP also has been monitoring legislation that could affect APRN practice. For example, the Council did not support the APRN multistate compact proposal. This promising idea would have required 2,080 additional practice hours while not guaranteeing APRN representation on the supervising board. Another proposal we are monitoring would limit RNs to working no more than 12 hours in a 24-hour period. We contacted the bill sponsor’s office to discuss the impact this could have on APRNs.
We encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity to give a shout-out to your colleagues through the APRNs You Should Know program. Publicly recognize a colleague by sending their name, contact information, and a paragraph about how they stand out to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Recognition is also happening for new APRN members, with a NANN-AP Council member personally reaching out to all new APRN members to welcome them. We want you all to know how much we value you, your membership, and your participation.
These are just highlights of how much the NANN-AP Council has achieved since 2022. Be sure to attend the APRN Summit where I will be presenting our accomplishments and goals for the future. I look forward to seeing everyone and celebrating NANN’s 40th anniversary!
Finally, a special thank you to Dr. Gail Bagwell for editing my newsletter column for the past 2 years. You always got it right!
