CENow! Learning Modules
Neonatal Blood Gas Analysis
The authors discuss the importance of accurate interpretation of blood gases using an organized, stepwise approach. A review of the underlying causes of blood gas changes and minimization of potential errors to allow for timely interventions will also be examined.
Necrotizing Enterocolitis
The authors discuss the multifactorial etiology of this disease in the VLBW infant. The importance of human milk in the preterm infant's immune defenses and educating parents and caregivers about special feeding needs as a means of prevention are also considered.
Extremely Low Birth Weight Infants
The author discusses the importance of maintaining a neutral thermal environment in the ELBW. Nursing interventions and implications are identified to decrease the incidence of temperature instability in the ELBW.
Sepsis and Antibiotic Use in Neonates
The author discusses neonatal sepsis and the importance of timing of diagnosis. Challenges with timing of treatment and liberal use or overuse of antibiotics are identified.
