The Impact of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses' Shift Length and Fatigue on Patient Safety presents recommendations based on current evidence, recommendations from governing bodies, and the NANNP workforce surveys.
NANNP recognizes that fatigue, sleep deprivation, and the extended shift lengths or hours that neonatal nurse practitioners often work present potential safety risks for patients, providers, and employers. Based on a review of current evidence, recommendations from governing bodies, and the NANNP workforce surveys, recommendations were formulated for the NNP regarding education, fatigue management, and systems management. NANNP recognizes further research is needed for the NNP role and various scope of practice, as well as fatigue management, patient safety, and job satisfaction.
