Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters: Guideline for Practice, 2nd Edition- Look for the printed version in the Online Store, September 2008
By Janet Pettit, MSN RNC NNP CNS, and Mary Mason Wyckhoff, PhD ARNP BC CCNS CCRN NNP

As the use of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) in infants continues to proliferate, guidelines such as this one are needed to support nursing practice and promote the safety of this vulnerable patient population. This guideline, the only one specifically targeted to infants with PICCs, does that on several fronts: It defines criteria for educational competencies for nurses inserting and maintaining PICCs, and presents criteria used to select infants and techniques for inserting a catheter. Other topics addressed include indentifying and managing complications and learning strategies for daily maintenance. This publication is a description of practices currently accepted and documented by neonatal care experts and is intended to provide a foundation for specific nursing protocols, policies, and procedures developed by individual institutions. Full-color figures illustrate veins that serve as PICC insertion sites.
